The second year that Kangeiko (early morning practice) is coming to the WaShinKan members has now also passed. Starting on Monday January 5th of 2015, most of the members were able to show up at 04:30 in the Dojo. The idea of Kangeiko is that you stimulate your body and mind. You practice at the coldest time of the year at some incredibly early times. It is also a very heavy training schedule, with 20 minutes of non-stop kirikaeshi, followed by 40 minutes of non-stop uchikomi/kakarigeiko. If you’re tough enough to survive this, the whole following hour is filled with Jigeiko. Basically, you have a 2-hour session of heavy practice, while you’re still sleepy and cold. If you are able to make it trough the whole week (including the last day of Kangeiko, where Kendoka from all other dojo’s are invited to come and train to this early winter session of Keiko.) you will feel refreshed and motivated for the rest of the year. It was the first year that most of the members had this practice, it was tough and very early, but also very much fun!
After the practice we quickly showered and changed, having a bit of time for a breakfast all together, this time in the Dojo itself. We did this every day, with breakfast still being cooked by Ivo. The breakfast consisted yet again of a bowl of warm rice with a egg, mixed with some soy sauce. It’s a good breakfast for having after practice and most of the people who joined felt both relieved as well as refreshed and motivated more and more every day.
On the 7th and last day of this year’s Kangeiko, for those who visited, everybody received a special certificate from WaShinKan. It has everyone’s first and last name on it, as well as a Japanese text saying you participated in the session, stating the date and location of the dojo. Starting from this year however, it will also include how many of the 7 days (for instance all days: 7/7) you have participated in our Kangeiko session!
